Attendance and Absences
Attendance
At Headcorn Primary School, good attendance is essential for children to achieve their best. When children attend regularly, they make better progress, build friendships and feel part of the school community.
We aim for excellent attendance for every pupil and encourage 100% attendance wherever possible.
If a child’s attendance falls below 96%, we may contact parents to offer support and work together to improve attendance.
School Day
- School starts: 8.50am
- School finishes: 3.20pm
- Register closes: 9.00am
Children should arrive by 8.50am each day.
If a child arrives:
- After 8.50am – they will be marked late
- After 9.00am – they will be recorded as absent for that session
All late arrivals must report to the school office with a parent or carer.
Reporting an Absence
If your child is absent, please contact the school on the first day of absence before 9.00am.
Please also:
- Contact us each day of absence
- Let us know when your child will return
This is important so we know that every child is safe.

Illness
Absence due to illness will usually be authorised.
If your child is absent for more than 5 days, the school may ask for medical evidence, such as an appointment card, prescription or doctor’s note.
Medical Appointments
Please try to arrange appointments outside of school hours where possible.
If this is not possible, inform the school in advance and ensure your child is absent for the shortest time necessary.
Term-Time Leave
Term-time leave is rarely authorised.
Leave may only be granted by the Headteacher in exceptional circumstances, such as:
- a close family funeral
- serious family circumstances
- medical or emotional needs supported by a professional
Family holidays during term time will not normally be authorised.
Unauthorised absence may result in a penalty notice issued by the local authority.
Supporting Good Attendance
If your child is finding it difficult to attend school, please contact us as soon as possible. We will work with you to understand any barriers and provide support.
Together, we can help every child attend regularly and make the most of their learning.
